WHI Breakfast

Dr. Darlene Williams, regional director for the Department of Housing and Urban Development , was a special guest speaker who described the significant benefits of affordable housing to the overall community.

The breakfast also featured the inaugural presentation of the Virginia L. Winker Woman of the Year Award, which was given to TCHP client Halli Adams in recognition of her success as a first-time homeowner. Read Halli’s story. The award was named in honor of the recently retired partner and legal counsel of TCHP, in recognition of her inspired leadership and service as well as her lifetime career of passionate dedication to affordable housing.

The WHI is a new collaboration created with the goal of increasing wealth accumulation for lower income, single mothers, particularly those residing in historically underserved sections of Tarrant County. Current TCHP partners in this effort include JPMorgan Chase and Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.

“More than 40 percent of Tarrant County family households are headed by women, many of whom have the potential to become proud, responsible homeowners but lack the resources to make it happen,” said Donna Van Ness, president of TCHP.

“Through our programs that prepare women for home purchase, women can increase savings, decrease debt, improve credit, and develop a long-term, sustainable plan for success,” she said. “These programs help women like Halli create a better future for their families, and ultimately lead to stronger neighborhoods and communities.”

Van Ness, Dr. Williams and Dr. Carrier encouraged event guests to consider how they can support the effort to make affordable housing a reality for women in our community.

“We need people and organizations who can help fund programs, support special events or offer their expertise,” said Van Ness. “Gifts of time, talent, and other resources are equally appreciated.”
