Overview of TCHP Classes

Orientation
Orientation classes are designed to inform the public of the opportunities, advantages, and challenges of homeownership. Also, homebuyers are educated on the process and availability of programs offered by TCHP.

Orientation classes are designed to prepare a household for homeownership by offering education on a range of topics which include homeownership goals and the process of buying a home. Participants are required to attend the orientation class prior to registering for the Homebuyer Workshop. To receive a Homebuyer Certificate, participant must attend Homebuyers Workshop and have met with a Housing advisor.

Homebuyer Education
This course provides an A-to-Z look at the entire homebuyer/homeowner experience. Homebuyer Education workshops are offered at least one Saturday each month, and every other month for those whose primary language is Spanish. Clients are required to attend an education class, whether offered by TCHP or another HUD-approved agency, in order to utilize special homebuyer products like down payment assistance. This class provides the answers to the many questions that first-time buyers tend to have: how to secure a mortgage; what to expect during the appraisal process; how to qualify for down payment and closing cost assistance; insurance basics; how to hunt for the perfect house; getting the most for your mortgage dollar; and life as a homeowner.

Budgeting
The Budgeting class will cover how to manage your day-to-day finances with an eye toward accomplishing your financial goals. Choosing and following a course toward long-term financial goals such as buying a house, sending your kids to college, retiring comfortably or building a financial safety net to prevent financial disasters caused by illness, job loss or other personal difficulties.

Lender Orientation
In order for a lender to participate in the programs on behalf of their client, lenders must attend the Lenders Orientation in which program guidelines and client requirements will be discussed.

TCHP also offers individual counseling on a range of housing topics, including pre and post-purchase issues, foreclosure prevention, and transitioning from renting to homeownership.
